If you are anything like me, you need to step everything out! For me to get from point A to point B, I need a plan — but not just a plan, I need to step it out.
“Stepping it out” means creating steps to reach my objective*. Visual steps — on paper, then on my corkboard and then into action.
Because I am so organized and need structure in my business to be successful, I need to break down my goals and work towards achieving just one goal at a time.
Once I’ve chosen a single objective, I need to create a plan to achieve it. The first thing I usually do is write it down — all of it! I seriously have three or four notebooks going on at one time. I have one for my personal goals, I have one for my budget/financial goals, I have one for my business goals and then one for my business brainstorming (this one gets messy).
Once it’s all written down, I have the blocks I need to build my steps.
Here is an example of this in action:
I wanted to create more engaging content for my followers. I had a mess of ideas that I thought would make for some juicy reads. They just kept coming to me like bees to honey, but when you’re overflowing with amazing ideas (and they come to you in the shower), you’ll likely struggle to organize them. I needed to break it all down.
The first thing I did was write all my content topics on sticky notes. As an idea came to mind, I wrote it down on its own sticky note. Then those sticky notes went on my bulletin board, where I could see them. It’s like writing out the story line to an amazing book you are about to write. Looking at them, physically, in my own writing on a board in front of me, helps me stay focused and on track.
Next I needed to write the content, because these are just topic ideas, not the content itself, but it’s all right in front of me so this should be easy. I scheduled this task into my calendar: I’d spend two hours a day writing content using the topics that were on my bulletin board. Sometimes I could write three or four articles in that time period. Other days I would only get one article written. Once I had a good stack of content written, I could start sharing it, moving me closer to my objective of engaging my readers.
See how I stepped the process out? I first established what it was I needed to accomplish (write better content). Then I created a way to organize my thoughts to write better content (getting it out of my head onto paper). I then organized it so that I could visually see my goal in action, and lastly, I designated time to make this goal happen.
I created a system to help me be as productive as possible. By being more productive, organized and grounded, I could write better content, which engages more readers, which had a clearer message about my services, which in turn landed more leads. You see how this whole system not only helped me write the content, it helped me write better content, because I was not rushed, stressed and disorganized, and I had a clear objective and plan on how I was going to achieve my goal.
If you take anything away from this article today, take this: set one clear objective/goal and step it out!
